Since the 1980s, New York State’s Office of Children and Family Services and its Children’s Justice program efforts have consistently identified children with disabilities as a vulnerable population for child abuse in all of its forms. As a result, it has supported the development of training programs, enhanced policies and appropriate interventions that have sought to sensitize investigative teams to the unique challenges that this population of children present as child abuse procedures are implemented throughout New York State. This website attempts to pull together some pieces of what we have learned, especially related to interviewing strategies for this vulnerable population of children, along with some basic knowledge and resources which can provide at least a starting point to more effective practices in protecting and supporting these individuals.
